BESSBROOK 150
Over four evenings in July, 1995 a football competition was held at the Pond Field in Bessbrook as part of the villiage's 150th anniversary celebrations. The competition would feature some of the and Irish League's most iconic players with the likes of Ollie Ralph, Ray Byrne, Glenn Ferguson, Stephen McBride, Marty Tabb, Tim McCann and Willie Crawley all representing strong lineups sent by Newry Town, Glenavon, Cliftonville and Dundalk.
A warmup match to get the competition up and running was also arranged between a Bessbrook Select team featuring players from Bessbrook Utd, Camlough Rovers and a few Newry Town players who were from the Bessbrook area against a Carnbane League Select team which featured some of the best Carnbane League players at the time - including Darren Mullen - Newry City's current Chairman and ex-manager and ex Newry Town players such as Joe Price, Hugh McAleavey and John Tumilty.
