ALMOST 50 YEARS WITHOUT DEFEAT

Newry City make the journey to Belfast on Saturday afternoon to face Queen's University at H&W Welders’ Blanchflower Stadium, with three important Championship points at stake.

Just a single point separates the sides heading into the weekend, with Queen's sitting fourth in the table on 19 points and Newry immediately below them in fifth on 18.

Saturday's encounter carries an intriguing historical statistic. Queen's University have not beaten Newry since November 1976 with the visitors looking to extend a remarkable 21-match unbeaten run against the students that stretches back almost half a century.

RECENT FORM

Newry head into Saturday's encounter looking to build on an encouraging 3–1 victory over Dundela at the Showgrounds last Friday evening.

That result was a welcome response to the previous week's narrow 2–1 defeat away to Loughgall and followed an entertaining 3–2 home victory over H&W Welders in late September.

Queen's University, meanwhile, have endured a mixed run of results in recent weeks. The students suffered a 1–0 home defeat to Ballinamallard United last Saturday, having previously secured an impressive 2–0 victory away to Dundela.

With both sides looking for greater consistency and just one point separating them in the Championship table, Saturday's encounter promises to be a closely contested affair.

HEAD TO HEAD

History is firmly on Newry's side heading into Saturday's encounter, with Queen's University having failed to record a victory over the City side for almost half a century.

Queen's last victory came on 27 November 1976, when they travelled to the Showgrounds and secured a 3–2 win in a B Division encounter. Remarkably, Newry have remained unbeaten in all 21 meetings between the clubs since that afternoon.

The sides have met on 71 occasions, with Newry recording an impressive 54 victories, 14 draws and just three defeats -

One of those rare defeats came back in the George Wilson Cup in 1972 when Newry played a second string team in which they played regular goalkeeper Ian Russell at centre forward! - Ian actually scored the opening goal, however we would eventually lose the game 7-2.

Newry's record away to Queen's is equally impressive. Across 35 away encounters, Newry have emerged victorious 26 times, drawn eight and suffered just one defeat.

The most recent meeting between the clubs took place on 19 March 2022, when the sides played out a goalless draw at the Showgrounds while our last visit to Queen's, on 18 December 2021, ended in a 1–0 victory with Daniel Hughes grabbing the winner on our way to the Championship title.

MATCH HISTORY

The history of this fixture stretches back almost 70 years, with the first recorded meeting between Newry Town and Queen's University taking place on 16 November 1957.

On that occasion, Newry made an emphatic start to the rivalry, recording a convincing 6–1 victory over the Belfast students.

One of the most memorable encounters came on 26 August 1972, when Newry travelled to Queen's and produced a remarkable 6–0 victory in a B Division fixture with Raymond McGuigan scoring a hat-trick — a result that remains the club's biggest recorded away win against the students.

With 71 previous meetings spanning nearly seven decades, this fixture has a rich history, and Newry will be hoping to add another positive chapter when the sides renew acquaintances at Blanchflower Stadium on Saturday.

LOOKING AHEAD

With just a single point separating the sides in the Championship table, Saturday's encounter represents an important opportunity for Newry to build momentum and climb above their Belfast opponents.

While the historical record overwhelmingly favours the visitors, Queen's will be determined to end their long wait for a victory.

Newry, meanwhile, will be hoping to build on last weekend's impressive victory over Dundela and continue their push up the Championship standings.

Can Newry extend their remarkable unbeaten record against Queen's University to 22 matches and return from Belfast with all three points?
